Steve Wilson • Osprey 750HT Amphibious

My wife, Jane, and I are lucky enough to spend much of our time at our house in a beautiful, relatively secluded, bay in the Marlborough Sounds, with beach access at our doorstep.

We recently came to the sobering realisation that we are aging to the point that we may not always want to go through having to involve a tractor, dinghy trailer, dinghy, boat and a boat trailer; all of which required washing down and storage; just to retain our passion for boating.

We resolved to go amphibious to future proof our fishing orientated lifestyle, and to equip us better for overnight cruising. We attended the Hutch Wilco Boat Show in May last year with the aim of purchasing a “wheelie”. The Boat Show was the ideal forum to assess options up close and talk with the experts. We were certain that we wanted the S35 Anura wheel system, we knew we wanted a boat that was around 7.5 metres, and that it needed to have certain features, but we were unsettled on the brand. Then we came across the Osprey boats stand, with a blue 750 Hard Top that had all the features we wanted, including a roomy cabin beautifully set up for cruising and an equally roomy cockpit that was a fisherman’s dream. Sadly it was not an amphibious boat! We happened to mention that to Malcolm, Matt and Hamish from Osprey Boats and they all lit up with sly smiles! “We have just taken our first order for one set up with the Anura wheel system” was the retort. They very soon had two orders!

That meeting set up the project that resulted in the best Christmas present we have ever bought ourselves! We have ended up with an amphibious boat option that is all we could ever have dreamed of or wanted – the envy of most that see her.

Right from the onset it was evident that we had picked an amazing boat builder to work with. The young, passionate, team approach each boat build project as an interactive partnership. Right from the start we knew that what we were going to get was what we specifically wanted.  Malcolm and Matt not only responded to a constant stream of questions and suggestions as if it was exciting and normal at the same time, but also catered for our excitement and passion with regular build update photos to go in the photo album I bore unsuspecting people with when I get them cornered!

Whilst two days at the boat show in Auckland gave the opportunity to select all the key build components and the motor and wheel systems that suited us best, we still were welcomed for three visits during the build process of the boat. None of these visits was wasted as Osprey go out of their way to achieve what I think of as “mass customisation”. Instrument layouts, appliances, power outlets internally and around the cockpit, grab rails, internal and external lighting, washdown facilities, fishing station – all were tailored to what we wanted to the point that “Cobalt” is definitely OUR boat and we have experienced complete ownership of her since the first plates were rolled and welded.

The boat is incredibly stable, but still pleasingly fast in a wide range of sea conditions and the 350 HP Helm Master equipped Yamaha 4 stroke is quiet and surprisingly fuel efficient. Osprey have done an admirable job of integrating the 750HT with the Anura S35, 4-wheel drive, wheel system – to the point that there is little to evidence that it is amphibious when it is on the water. The front wheel is out of sight from within the boat, tucked under a tasteful protective bow platform, and the rear wheels (together with side deployed boarding ladders, simply form safety barriers around the fishing platform at the stern. All control systems are beautifully integrated to the point where getting the most out of a very well specified and equipped boat is a breeze.

Now all we are waiting for cafes set up to specifically accommodate amphibious boats around the Marlborough Sounds and there will be no more to wish for. We have everything else. Well done, Osprey!

Don Brown • Osprey 800HT

I bought an Osprey 800 HT in 2017 as the ultimate safe trailerable boat.

What I also got was an extremely well built boat with great handling in West coast conditions and a huge cockpit capable of handling 4-6 anglers. Well done Osprey!

JR Higgins • Osprey 495C

In 2021 we decided to purchase our first new boat, after talking with many manufacturers Osprey were very welcoming and helpful going above and beyond throughout the design and build process.

As for the boat, it's built perfectly. It rides like a dream. Very safe and comfortable. Highly recommend Osprey.

Ricky Scott • Snapper Express • 850HT

My Osprey 850HT is an incredible and versatile fishing vessel. It handles incredibly well in all sea conditions and my charter clients rate it highly for its spaciousness and stability.

To the Osprey team,

A huge thanks for my latest boat from you, once again you have delivered on all your promises and made the whole process easy.

As you know, I’m a fan of your boats, in my  opinion they’re the best pontoon boat in NZ which is why I’m a repeat customer.

You have kept the consistency of an excellent product but upped your game in the last few years and your boats are looking better than ever.

Thanks Malcolm, Matt and the rest of the Osprey team.

Mark Johnson • Osprey 800HT and 700HT

We are having our second boat built at the moment, the team at osprey have been brilliant to work with, nothing is a problem for them to do or change, a great team and boat

Naomi Anderson • Osprey 450C • Owner

Being a local, highly regarded company with many years of experience were some of the factors that led us to choose Osprey.

In all our dealings with Malcolm, face to face and by email, we found him very helpful, informative and professional, and always friendly and incredibly patient with our endless questions and often changing requests!

We couldn't be happier with our choice of boat. Our Osprey is so easy to handle and just a dream to launch and load back onto the trailer. We would recommend anyone to consider buying an Osprey.

Leigh Wilson • Owner

G'day kiwis, my mate and I purchased a 540 osprey which runs a 115 yamaha and being from Devonport Tasmania we do a lot of fishing in Bass strait which is known to be the roughest stretch of water in the world and our Osprey handles these conditions a lot better than any boat that I have been in and owned previously.

I have no hesitation in recommending an Osprey to potential boat owners and are questioned frequently at the local boat ramp about all aspects of the boat, which are still uncommon here and I tell them not to buy an oppositions boat. Get an Osprey and a couple of them have.

Well done kiwis. Your tassie mate Leigh Wilson.

Chris Prattley • Owner

"When my wife and I have been by ourselves, we have found the Osprey a dream to launch and manoeuvre close to the ramp or beach - a real feature for husband and wife. Ease of access, particularly from the stern has been a real plus.

The boat's superior stability is a feature that really comes into its own, especially when fishing with extra numbers. A work colleague is in the process of updating his Osprey, and has been offered almost what he bought for it over five years ago. I would be only too happy to recommend an Osprey."

Grant Thorn • Fisherman

"Just a quick note to inform you how rapt we are with our 540 Osprey. Since purchasing it last year we have travelled extensively in her for our diving and fishing expeditions. Trips out of Kaikoura, Okiwi Bay and to Stephens Island and Cape Jackson are handled with ease.

With a mix of divers and fishos loaded, plus their gear on board, the handling and stability of the boat is exceptional. We often head down to the Sounds loaded with pig dogs and gear and find the Osprey perfect for off loading and boarding on beaches."

When my family decided to build a boat to be based on Stewart Island, for me there was only one choice, having spent thousands of hours on Osprey Aqua Taxis in the Abel Tasman National Park. When it comes to stability, safety and confidence Osprey boats are the ultimate package.

We had a long list of custom features added to the build: the major ones being the extra long cabin and extended cockpit overhang, the boat had the potential to look like a dogs breakfast but Lloyd and the team got the lines right to build a great looking boat. It’s efficient to run and has great shelter from Stewart Island’s and Foveaux straight’s changeable conditions. The boat is so versatile that we now run it as a charter boat.

“Over the last 16 years we have tried and discarded many boats, looking for the perfect water taxi. We purchased one of the first Osprey’s, and have become a proving ground for Osprey, clocking up huge hours in all sea conditions, with maximum horsepower and heavy loads.

Our Ospreys have proved to be tough, safe and extremely stable and they give a smooth dry ride in most conditions. We now have seven Ospreys in our fleet”.
